It’s restrained and elegant on the nose showing grapefruit, crunchy apple and subtle savoury notes, leading to a finely textured palate offering linear mouthfeel and tight structure. Crisp-dry and lingering with delicate fruit flavours. At its best: now to 2023.

Unusual to see a wine labelled as pinot grigio in New Zealand. Dry and quite flavoursome with apple, pear and quince characters backed by fresh acidity and fine, peppery tannins.

Enticing, fleshy and fruity bouquet with delicate lite red fruit aromas with a stronger more robust bouquet to white fleshed fruits and a touch of citrus. Balanced and refreshing on the palate with flavours that reflect the nose. Plenty of acidity, satin texture and lengthy rather satisfying finish.

Bright, pale onion-skin, slightly watery rim. The nose is open, well-packed with succulent aromas of pear drop and quince, along with white florals, underlying powdery spices. Dry to taste, medium-light bodied, exotic aromas of pineapple, melon interweave pear and quince form an elegant core, along with citrus juice and peels, added spicy interest. The fruit has ripeness balance, supported by mouthwatering acidity and full of crunch; carry good energy and flow smoothly to a crisp finish. Short time on skins to extract colour, fermented in stainless steel to 11.9%, 3.5 g/l RS. Match with salmon pate and charcuterie over the next 2 years.

Viticulture

Our vines are now sending their roots deep into the old soils of the Upper Awatere valley, soils which have been molded over the millennia and the vines struggle to find the nutrients they need, helping to reduce the crop naturally, giving us small but flavoursome fruit every year.

Harvest begins before the grapes become too ripe, to capture the fresh crisp flavours of the Pinot Gris grape.  The berries are healthy and pop off the vine as the harvester gently makes its way down each row under the watchful eye of clear night skies.

Winemaking

After time on skins to let the colour seep out, the juice is separated from the skins and fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks until dry.  Once finished, the wine is racked off yeast lees and left to relax until bottling.

Climate conditions high in the Awatere Valley can often resemble that of the hills around Veneto, Italy.  Hot days and cool dry nights with fresh sea breezes blowing off the Pacific Ocean help to ripen the fruit slowly, perfect conditions for the Italian style of Pinot Grigio.  Made in the same dry and fruit driven style, this wine is beautiful, with a hint of pink.

Our Pinot Grigio is young and fresh with orchard apple aromas and dry to taste with a lovely mineral acidity that cleanses the palate beautifully.
